Supplements & Practices That Have Helped My Sobriety

Holistic sobriety support goes far beyond willpower, it requires rebuilding the nervous system, gut health, brain energy, and mineral balance after quitting cannabis.

For me, it has not just been about “quitting.” It’s been about rebuilding.

In the beginning, I sought psychiatric help. For a short season, I used prescription medication to help stabilize my brain and quiet the overstimulated pathways that cannabis had wired. It helped me get through withdrawal safely. I was struggling and being very hard on myself. It was a bridge for me, not a crutch. Now I support my system daily with supplements and nervous system practices instead.

For me, stopping cannabis and no longer returning to alcohol, has required more than willpower & therapy. It has required supporting my nervous system, my minerals, my sleep, and my mood in practical, grounded ways.

I don’t crave alcohol anymore. Though, I used to drink heavily. In the past year, I’ve had alcohol maybe three times and regretted it every single time. That regret wasn’t shame. It was clarity.

My body is done with that cycle.

What I’ve learned is this:

When you remove a substance, you must replace it with support. Here are the supplements and tools that have genuinely helped me.

Creatine — Rebuilding Brain Energy

Creatine is often associated with strength training, but it also supports cellular energy production in the brain and mood support, especially for women. Research suggests women may have lower baseline creatine stores compared to men, which can make energy production and mood support especially important during stress or recovery.

When I stopped smoking, I experienced intense periods of rage, mental fatigue and moments of fogginess. My body was recalibrating. Adding creatine daily has helped me feel more stable mentally and physically. My workouts feel stronger. My thinking feels clearer. I don’t hit the same afternoon crash.

Bovine Colostrum — Supporting Gut Repair

Addiction disrupts digestion more than we realize.

There’s a strong connection between your gut and your brain. The bacteria living in your gut help control mood, stress levels, and even cravings. When your gut is out of balance, which can happen with alcohol, drugs, stress, or poor diet- your nervous system can feel anxious and unstable. Sometimes what feels like a craving is actually your body trying to regulate itself. Supporting gut health can help calm the body and make recovery feel more steady.

Colostrum supports your gut lining, immune balance, and nutrient absorption. Colostrum also carries a deeply maternal energy, it is the first form of protection and nourishment given at the beginning of life.

Real Salt & Electrolytes — Mineral Repletion

Cravings are not always emotional. Sometimes they are physiological.

When substances are removed, the adrenal system recalibrates. Minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium become essential.

Adding high-quality salt and electrolytes daily has reduced headaches, stabilized my energy, and prevented that “wired but exhausted” feeling. Sometimes what feels like a craving is actually depletion.

Cannabis artificially relaxes the nervous system. When you remove it, your body has to relearn how to regulate itself naturally.

Topical magnesium has supported me in sleep, muscle relaxation, and lower stress reactivity. I use a topical spray and spray it on my calves and feet before bed.

Chamomile & Valerian Root — Gentle Sleep Support

Sleep can become disrupted when you stop smoking. I struggle immensely with insomnia and always have, even before the weed. Herbs have helped ease that transition without numbing my system.

Chamomile softens the mind and supports digestion. It is my favorite of all the herbs.

Valerian root helps me fall asleep more easily and stay asleep longer.

They assist my body in resting, not overriding it and giving me that hang over feeling the next morning.

The Practices That Anchor It All

Supplements support the body. Practices train the nervous system. Consistency Matters.

Breathwork

When cravings or emotional spikes arise, I breathe first.

Longer exhales help regulation. I use 4 counts in and 8 counts out, though you should find the rhythm that feels best for you.

Breathwork has been one of the most powerful tools in reminding me that I can shift my state without reaching for something external.

Light Visualization

I keep this simple. I visualize clarity. I visualize white light. Strength. My future self grounded and disciplined.

Sobriety is not just about removing a habit, it is about reinforcing your identity. Visualization strengthens that identity daily. Reiki healing is also another powerful tool and we all have the ability to use this power. Practice using your hands to feel your energy field and mentally bring in the white light through your hands and into your body.

Daily Affirmations

Another practice that has supported me is affirmations.

I write them. I read them. I listen to them first thing in the morning.

Before my day begins, I anchor myself in who I am becoming. That repetition matters. It reshapes my internal dialogue. It strengthens discipline. It builds belief in a stable future version of myself. Again, consistency matters. Practice, Practice, Practice!

Gentle Yoga & Stretching

Addiction disconnects you from the body. Movement reconnects you.

Slow stretching, hip openers- especially for me, and slow spinal movements. Nothing extreme. Just movement and presence.

When I move consistently, emotions move with me. They don’t get stored or suppressed. My body feels grounded instead of restless. Sometime I cry, sometimes I laugh, sometimes rage comes through. Be your own witness. Observe the emotions and let them pass through you with gratitude of being able to feel.

What I’ve Learned

Through these supplements and practices, your minerals are replenished. Your digestion stabilizes. Your sleep improves. Your nervous system feels supported. Your body feels stronger. Cravings soften.

Not because you’re fighting them, but because your body no longer needs artificial regulation.

This journey hasn’t been about punishment.

It has been about rebuilding integrity.

Sobriety feels sustainable when the whole system is supported.

And that has made all the difference.
